When it comes to Halloween, dogs are a lot like children, they love treats and lots of attention. So why not enjoy your dog this Halloween along with the rest of the family and festivities? And while you’re at it, how about a costume for your dog that complements your party, or trick-or-treaters?

A great way to pick a truly fitting dog Halloween costume is to think about your dog’s overriding personality. Here’s a somewhat abbreviated list of favorite dog costumes from past Halloweens, just to give you some ideas to work with.

1. Escaped Convict/Jailbird
Here’s a classic look for that little rascal, who’s constantly being caught stealing food off the table, or escapes from the backyard to socialize in the neighborhood. The black and white stripes for you – shame….bad dog!

2. The Angel
So you’ve got the perfect dog, why not flaunt it with a halo and pair of wings? The fairy princess is another favorite with wings.

3. Devil
How many dogs fit the devil image, especially when they’re going through puppyhood with an urge to chew and too much pent-up energy? Unfortunately most puppies don’t have much of a conscience either. The Tasmanian Devil would be another great look.

4. Bride and Groom
A great costume theme for two dogs, works even better if the groom is a little nervous and the bride is a larger dog. Could be a killer costume with a lab bride and a chihuahua groom.

5. Superman or Batman
Works well for a dog with supreme confidence and a body of steel. These are dogs who are smart, strong, fast and capable of extreme heroics in taking care of their humans – no slackers in this group.

6. Pirate
The pirate is my favorite Halloween dog costume, just because so many dogs look really cute with an eye patch!

7. Clown
When I think of the clown costume, I remember a couple of golden retrievers who were absolutely hilarious and entertaining with their antics and would have made great clowns.

8. King or Queen
The King and Queen is another great couples look if you happen to have a male and a female dog. This works great if they also happen to be a bit pampered and spoiled and have assumed a royal attitude about the household.

9. Other Animals, Wild or Domestic
Have you ever seen a harlequin great Dane that could’ve passed as a cow, if it had a set of horns, or a pug that would’ve looked great in a frog suit?

10. Cowboys or Cowgirls
This is always a classic for Halloween dog costumes, would also work well for a Mexican bandito, with sombrero and bandaliers.

To pull off a killer Halloween costume for your dog this year, start early. Get your costume ready and give your dog a chance to get accustomed to that hat or other costume accessory. Preparing your dog for the big event will take a little time, patience and practice on your part, but will pay off in a lot of fun and memories on Halloween night.
